My mum knew when I was young that I was upset by the noise of balloons popping, so she made up a song to attempt to trivialise it. It simply went:
Ohhh, the toy balloon went pop pop pop
The toy balloon went pop pop pop
The toy balloon went pop pop pop
And everyone asked it to stop
Buuuutt…
The toy balloon went pop pop pop… etc etc
Nice try, mum. Unfortunately that idea backfired, as it suggested to me that one balloon could pop multiple times. Might have been better if the song had gone “Ohhh, the toy BALLOONS went pop pop pop”.
And in fact I subsequently had a nightmare in which a balloon (it was a yellow one) was inflating all by itself, even though it already had holes it.
