Given I'm originally from the U.K. but now have lived in the U.S. for almost 15 years, I'm not sure who's tally I should be added to!

I'm in general agreement with what folks have said that people in Western Europe - Germany and the continent even more so than the U.K. - are more inclined to be open about their fetishes and are less likely to be judged.

There are huge regional differences in the US, so there is not one answer - but I think in general fetishes are a bit more taboo. Still, the population means there must be lots of US looners "below the surface".

I have only ever met one other looner in person, and he was American, but I didn't really try to meet other looners until I came here.

palloncino90 - keep your spirits up! I'm not sure Italy is the worst place in the world to be a loner. Other countries come to mind. Besides, Italy is home to those awesome Cattex balloons and beautiful Italian women to play with them!

In my country there is only one single looner i met on instagram that i know of.

living in a 6 million pop country won't help either.

I think Germany has the most looners tbh. Lots of luftballons there aswell.

Besides Cattex, Italy has ITALOON!!! There’s plenty of beautiful ladies there!

It seems like in Europe, they are ‘more open’ to talk about fetish’s and things. Not so much here in the States, at least through my personal experience. I have a few close female friends in Germany that I have spoken with about my ‘balloon fetish’, and they have been very receptive to this. The couple of female friends that I have told here, not so much. Always get that ‘What??? Balloons??’, confused look. Though one friend, she did say that there’s much worse out there in the world. Brits are kinky ... we have a lot more freedoms than many, not so constrained as Catholic European countries, and a richer history of perversion and fetish than many western countries.
And we are possibly more vocal on an English speaking forum.

I agree with you on the exposure thing although I can only share my own experience on it. I lived in Germany during part of my childhood and feel that my phobia/fetish would not have been as intense (and maybe would have never ended up with the fetish) if I did not live there back then. So much more balloon exposure and they would often pop too. Obviously places get decorated with balloons in Canada too but I find it much less common and mostly is in indoor public places like malls which are safe from weather. I have also never witnessed display balloons accidentally pop like I have in Germany. Or maybe it was just some bad luck back then.

I am actually happy to be a looner now. This wasn’t meant to sound negative. Sorry if it came across like that.

I've made this comment before, but I feel that Europeans in general are more open to sex and all the "pond ripples" that come from it. I think the movie EuroTrip hit the nail on the head with their "America was founded by prudes" line.

America in general is more open to violence than sex where it is the opposite in Europe (general thought from TV, movies, etc.).

I've always wondered about why Germany seems to be so much of a hotspot when it comes to looners. Back when I was a kid my fears were definitely fueled by birthday parties, carnival, school and sports festivities that most of the time involved popping balloons at some point, which used to scare the living bits out of me. I can't tell whether it still is that way nowadays, but that's how it was in the 90s and early 00s. It may have been the same way in the UK.

Maybe it's because Europe hasn't gotten into the frequent wars we used to have for a long time now and we just miss the sound of explosives going off so we compensate for that with balloons. But that's just a theory. :P

AGREE. It was Christmas 1962 that did it for me, or at least after 12th night, when I had to watch my friends Dad bursting all the Balloons. I was terrified and at the same time mesmerised by the scene. That sowed the seed for me.
