I think it is a valid complaint when you can buy an enterprise server grade 18TB HDD for less than 270$ including shipping now. It could literally hold over 13000 of your "large" 1.2GB videos since after formating a 18TB HDD in windows it will have 16.37TB of storage for use. Of course depending on your budget you might want to take a smaller HDD, but it would still take countless 1.2GB videos to fill it. You could even put it into an external HDD case and connect it via USB if you wanted so you can hide it more easily from potential family members or roommates.
If you get a black screen you are probably just missing a video codec. Try this media player:
