VLC is not spyware, it is the most popular media player out there. If anything the inbuild windows medial player and windows itself are spyware

windows media player is phoning home everything you watch by the way...
you cna easily record the network activity while you watch something... you can try to block most but that is some efford out of the box windows media player tells everything m$. feel free to test that yourself wireshark is a pretty good packet sniffer...

concerning malware or other disasters have a solid backup strategy with one backup physically seperated from the computer...
