    Questions about the word “looner”

Hello! I recently mentioned to another “looner” that I dislike the term. Does anyone know where it originated? Do high heel fetishists call themselves “heelers?” Do foot fetishists call themselves “footers?”

I can’t think of an alternative though, outside of simply balloon fetishists, vinyl fetishists, inflatable fetishists, etc.

Re: Questions about the word “looner”

    Hi there,

I never really 'adopted' the term 'looner' either. At first - during the time I thought I was the only one with these feelings about balloons - I did not even think it had a name. I just thought I was kind of crazy or mildly insane. After having discovered that others shared the way I feel I started to think of it as my balloon 'thing', and this is how I still think about it. Apart from this 'thing' I am just like anybody else I guess.
I don't think less about 'looners' - not at all, but it is just not the term I use when I think of myself.

Thank you for reading my posting.

    Sincerely
    Susie

      Yeah, it's really not great:
      • It almost seems even weirder than it actually is (which is already pretty weird)
      • It somehow implies non-existent language difficulties (everything must be abbreviated)

Can't really identify with it. It's more of a search keyword than anything else.

Still can't think of an alternative though.

Calling yourself a balloonist lets people assume you are into hot air balloons. Only problem there is if they ask to go for a ride sometime. Then you'll have a major choice to make.

Yeah, ‘looner’ sounds like it could be associated with bird watching, or, depending on how you pronounce it, something dealing with the moon (lunar). It’s almost a derogatory term. The reason why I say that, is because of one of my other interest - the railroad (trains). The two terms that come to mind that are associated with ‘railfanning’ are, one — FRN (fuckin’ railroad nut). This is someone who is a ‘know-it-all’, and yet doesn’t know shit about what he’s talking about. The other is ‘foamer’. This term can be applied to many hobbies, and likes. This means that the person in question ‘foams at the mouth’ just by being near anything associated with trains. It’s gets even worse when there’s a train is in sight, especially when you know that there’s a good possibility of something interesting on the train.

I'm not overly impressed with the word myself . I can't think of a better alternative though .

                    How about...

Gonflagianado: an aficionado of all things inflatable. It rolls of the tongue in casual conversation and has an air of erudition and mystery, as long as you don't explain what it actually means.

Looner sounds infantile. Like baby talk. I just call it my balloon fetish.

I think after searching it so much on sites or ebay ive kind of come to accept it over a very long time. Hated it for years but now I'm a looner doesnt bother me at all.

Howver I'm like, we here really are the ones who could rename it!
