    Is anyone into heatstretching?

    Hello everybody,

Is anyone into heatstretching inflatables? The past few days it was 30+ degrees Celsius here in the Netherlands so I grabbed some inflatables (black) and laid them in the backyard in direct sun. Here is one of my inflatables (Intex Pinguin).

Normaly it is 150 centimeters long. Now it is 160 centimeters in length. Fin to fin is 120 centimeters. I don't know what was normal. But it looks like a fully inflated balloon now .

Looks nice, but from what I've heard it's better to use boiling water to heat stretch them rather than sunlight - it will stretch more evenly.

        :O It looks lovely!

Heat stretching is like an arcane art to me. I want to try it but aside from "boiling water," I have no idea how it is done so anybody who posts pictures is probably a wizard. Has anyone ever sat down and written like... how to do it without ruining the inflatable or making a huge mess?

          I use boiling water.
Blow up the item until it's firm, put it in the bath and gently trickle water from the kettle over it so it runs all over to soften all of the material. Then blow it up some more. I keep doing this until it's the size I want or, more often than not, pops.

            Are the pops intentional?

I'm guessing she gets a bit carried away.
How big will it go? Only one way to find out...

                No
Once the material gets so thin it becomes more like a balloon or bubble, so very easy to accidentally pop, even just catching it on something like a watch or ring.

The last beach ball I heatstretched went from 48inch to just shy of 72 inches.... Sadly the vinyl changed its composition from soft, sticky to a hard almost Cellophane like material. I left it packed away for a few weeks, when I reinflated it again it was really stiff and soon popped. What ever I'd done, the hot water I used had leeched out a lot of the plasticiser

Did it just spring a leak or did it completely burst.

A 1 inch split on a seam opened up...

                            So a rather large leak.

I've fixed some pretty leaks (1.5 foot seam split, wing ripped off a swimline duck), a one inch split should be pretty easy
