    why do you use earplugs?

1 Because you still have fear of popping sound.
2 Because you just don't like loud sounds
3 Because you read somewhere that loud sounds could get you deaf for life
    4 All of the above.
    Other...

I do not have earplugs but it seems to be a good idea, I have single-sided deafness and answer 3 looks good for me.
Let it be, let it free...but keep it nicely

I've never used earplugs (for balloons) in my entire life, no plans of doing so either.

No earplugs for me. Before I developed the fetish, I was afraid of the loud popping sound. But now that's one of my favorite things about balloons. I know that I run the risk of damaging my hearing, but I've accepted that. There are so many other ways that you could damage your hearing, at least I'm enjoying myself.

I don't like loud noises in general and I also like to keep my hearing intact, so I always use earplugs when I got balloons around.

All of the above personally. I love the pop and the loud sound but it truly scares me (although I want to conquer this!), also loud sounds, in general, are not my favorite thing, sudden loud bangs I'm quite phobic of. Also, I am a pilot and need to protect my hearing for work so I do have to limit my exposure to damaging sounds, not fun when trying to learn to love the pop even more but I'm trying to be smart about it since I am just now starting my career.

On the one hand I want to keep my hearing intact.
There are enough other loud noises I expose myself, e.g. concerts or racing events.

On the other, I have still some fear of the popping sound and wearing earplugs makes me feel more comfortable while playing with, inflating or popping balloons.

It's strange howeveer, how many people on here who enjoy the popping sound are somewhat phobic of other loud sounds?

I'm confident I've already done hearing damage from several decades of hundreds of balloons per year. About 5 years ago, I started wearing ear plugs. You can still hear the balloon pop, it's just not as loud.

To reduce the startle on the first few pops. I think it's mainly placebo, gives me that extra confidence.

                          Good point, same here.

Using earplugs makes me feel more a bit more comfortable when it comes to popping.

Definitely! I've noticed that other things helps as well. A few years ago, when I really went in for finally doing a blow to pop, I found that wearing gloves made it a little easier too. I've also heard someone suggesting wearing a winter coat to dampen the "shockwave" from bigger balloons when they pop.

                              Hm, could also work.
In retrospective, I had some blowing sessions while laying in bed and being covered with a blanket which made me feel quite comfortable. Didn't do any B2Ps then, but blew these balloons really tight...
