How many times have you reused a balloon?

I have some new balloons (Q11, belbal 14 and a Q24) and was wondering how many times they can be reinflated before there's a risk of popping. After fully inflating and deflating a Q11 it looks very thin but seems fine at the moment but I don't want any to pop as I'm still very phobic at the moment.

Re: How many times have you reused a balloon?

I'm also somewhat phobic. Personally my best luck has been with Tuftex, provided a good batch with minimal defects. They seem to last forever and have a softer pop if they suffer an "accident." They start to get squishy when they have been blown up too many times, and they are still okay for a long time after that. They are predictable to neck because they start to get really tight if they have been blown up too many times, so they give plenty of warning before they enter the "danger zone." lol

All brands, sizes 14 and under seem thinner and general and more prone to popping.

Q24 - mixed results, and loudest. These don't seem to age too well. I think the neck area wears out too fast from reusing a lot. They seem to always be tight regardless, so a lot less warning signs than tuftex. Same problem with belbals - have never had any that were completely free of defects, so a tight balloon with defects will pop unpredictably.

I have a couple of GLs I've probably reused 20 times or so. Generally speaking, the smaller the balloon, the fewer times I reuse them.

Re: How many times have you reused a balloon?

It depends on what you're doing with them, if you abuse them they might not last very long, but if you're not overinflating them too much you can reuse 12" quite a few times, I always do. I have some pearlized 9" ones that are totally stretched out because I've blown them so big and so many times and they haven't popped yet after a dozen or so inflations so I think in general they don't wear out that fast. I did try to stretch some other 9"ers with heat and stretching and inflation and those burst just barely past rated size after just a few inflations though, so again it depends on what you're doing with them.

Re: How many times have you reused a balloon?

I'm a semi-popper and it can often get agrivating if a balloon pops when I don't want it to so I have a method to test how long a balloon lasts. I give it a 30 second session to see if it's sturdy which I will know will last a lot of uses. My record is 20 uses. If a balloon doesn't feel sturdy and I know it won't take much to pop I will set it in the Pile of balloons I save for a pop session but those are rare.

I have a load of qualatex 11" polka dots and some of them have had 6 or 7 inflations and seem pretty ok still. My belbal 14" get huge after a couple of inflations compared to a new one and also seem ok?

I am ultra cautious of weak spots when inflating and if I see a few I tend to tie off and not re inflate. I would say that I've had more accidental pops with qualatex than belbal lately. The only belbal that pooped without warning was being inflated on an electric pump. I should have know better because it was resistant from a very small size so clearly had a fault. It popped At about half its rated size. I am a non popper so am very cautious on inflation, good luck with yours!

I have added a pic of a couple of belbals. The blue one on the left has had one inflation to about 60% rated size compared to the purple one which is brand new, just for a comparison of how big they get on the first go!

Mine seem to be a lot bigger and thinner after just a few inflations.
Belbal 14 on left, qualatex 11 on right. One new one inflated once or twice

Ahh, the perfect thread for me!

My favorites are the GL series balloons from Cattex, which are gigantic even when uninflated.

  • Used clear GL1200
  • Used heat stretched yellow GL700
  • Used purple GL500
  • Unused white GL1200
  • Unused blue GL700
  • Unused purple GL500

Plus a standard 12-inch ruler for scale. The used GL1200 is almost four feet long :)

I reuse balloons until they start to show big weak spots or the color itself starts to fade giving a more translucent one.

I use balloons until they pop. I've still got balloons from over 3 years ago

Re: How many times have you reused a balloon?

Usually the bigger the balloon the more times you can reuse it. With small balloons, after being deflated they've stretched enough to be highly unstable and will most likely pop on the next inflation, but with the punch ball balloons I've had they've survived multiple re-inflations (over the course of many days) and they haven't weakened at all. I tend to stay away from older balloons anyway, they've lost their shine and squeak due to oxidizing.

I like oxidized the best. Send them this way :) I usually keep mine inflated or reuse them until they have an "accident"

What if they get messy, do you just wash them off? Yes, the thinner they are I think the less time they last, get real wrinkled up.

i use them as much as possible, specially big balloons since their expensive.

Re: How many times have you reused a balloon?

I reuse them till they pop and I have to keep blowing them up bigger to get the same firmness. So the either end in blow to pops or pop while I'm riding them. I love not knowing when a balloon is going to pop!

Re: How many times have you reused a balloon?

:)Same! I can get A LOT uses out of my balloons! Being that I'm a small guy i have no problem with over inflating my balloons & reusing them time and time again. :D whether its my weather balloons or qualitex, Cattexs , tuf texs; I will re inflate them several times over until they get worn & burst! I also love not knowing when the balloon is gonna pop!:p That's most definitely part of the fun!!! & if I make a mess on the balloon i simply clean it off with warm, soapy water for future use. I also love the SMELL of old balloons when they stretch & stress! Being that I'm a semi popper/popper I just love when the balloon randomly pops! It sends me over the edge, for sure! But alas...it always leaves me sad every time i lose a balloon...but then i remember i have hundreds & can do over & over again! ;)

I usually don't re-use my balloons. I prefer to inflate them by mouth and I don't think it is very hygienic to re-inflate them. The only balloons I use several times are bigger ones that I inflated by pump, such as GL500, or 24" or 36" balloons.

Why wouldn't it be hygienic? It's not like you're rubbing dirt into them or anything.

Bacteria and fungi. I've never had any problems myself though. Just keep them in a dark airtight container. Silica gel and oxygen absorbers can help as well.

I have wondered if you inflate a balloon while you have a cold, forget, and then play with it later if you could catch the same cold. I HIGHLY doubt it, but I would bet a sinus infection could be caused by fungus, which would live ... I don't know, forever maybe.

It hasn't stopped me yet :)

No because A. You can't catch the same strain of cold because your body learns to fight it off. (There's loads of strains which is why you can't vaccinate against all of them) and B. You actually get infected from a cold through your tear duct.
Biggest problem would be bacteria from your mouth. It's mostly harmless but there's a lot.

They (unknown gender) did say they blow them up by mouth, and that puts saliva into the balloon. Even after a couple of inflations a balloon can fill with it, it's disgusting. Hence why I use a pump.

Re: How many times have you reused a balloon?

I reuse them all the time, you just have to hold them by the drip point and shake them a bit to get the moisture out of them, sometimes pinching just below that point with the other hand and drawing the rest out towards the neck. Not a perfect fix but it gets them dry enough that evaporation easily takes care of the rest. It's also not all spit, a lot of it is just condensation from your breath. It's your own either way so I don't find it gross or whatever.

Re: How many times have you reused a balloon?

I mean when I blow up balloons it's not like I'm spitting into them or anything, the air is a bit moist from my lungs but not enough that they "fill up" with anything.

I've reused the same balloons dozens of times without getting sick or any noticeable "gunk" inside them, although my evidence is purely anecdotal. I store the balloons in airtight bags in a shoebox. They're probably cleaner than my toothbrush...

Re: How many times have you reused a balloon?

I use a pump to blow up my loons. After i am done with them i deflate them and store them for another time. Whenever that next time comes i inspect them after blowing them up. Its easy to do because of the crystal colours. If they got too messy I turn them inside out and blow little air in them so they are easier to wash. After that I rinse them in either the sink or the shower. I dry them with a towel and retalc them while they are blown up a little. This retalc process will keep them from becoming sticky and as a bonus will make them extremely soft to the touch!

I usually check both the inside and outside for water to make sure the balloons will last for as long as possible!

Re: How many times have you reused a balloon?

one good trick is to use a hair dryer or even a heat gun very gently and it will bring the balloon to almost new condition. i have done this many times and it works really well. if you are using a heat gun make sure not to get to close as it will make a weak spot in the balloon and cause premature failure of the balloon. great results though if done correctly.

what happens? one tick i have done that works well inflate the balloon ever so slightly and then use the heat guy at a distance from the balloon working all around it it until it shrinks back to its original size.

Try putting it in a ziploc bag and then in a clothes dryer on high heat for 15-30 minutes. The heat will restore the original uninflated shape of the balloon, and as a bonus, make it stretchier when you inflate it.

(Keep each balloon in its own bag, they can stick to each other otherwise)

i will defiantly be trying this. sounds like a great idea.

I don't know if anyone has tried this, I have, just run warm, hot water over the balloon. You can do it several times. It gets bigger and bigger. It also gets stretcher. On some doll balloons I will just work the head this way. You don't fill the balloon, I try not to get water inside, you can watch it shrink, but it does not go back to original size.

I also use the clothes dryer method, but a bit differently. I put the balloons in a clean pillow case and use medium heat for 10 minutes. It restores the balloons really well. Using a cloth container like a pillow case it's possible to put multiple balloons in the container and they've never stuck to each other.

On my dryer the high heat setting is too hot and sometimes damages the latex. The medium setting works perfectly every time.

I use an elastic band to close up the pillow case - - it keeps the balloons from tumbling out.
